The Built in Windows Disk Defragmenter is a tool that performs what we like to refer to as 'housekeeping' for your hard drive. Fragmented simply means that a file is not stored in one location, but has stored pieces spanned across your entire hard drive, causing for you to lose efficiency and reliability, as your drive has to search for the fragmented file each time you try to open or use it. The instructions below guide you through a process which will "defragment" or repair this problem and get you running much more efficiently:
'Disk Degragmentation'1. Open ‘My Computer' ![]()
2. Select your Main hard drive (usually labeled ‘C: Local Disk') 3. Right Click this icon to display the menu and click ‘properties' ![]()
4. This will display a window with 6 tabs. Select the tab labeled ‘Tools'
5. Select ‘Defragment Now' and click ‘Defragment' once the Disk Defragmenter Wizard comes up
6. Be sure your main disk is selected (usually labeled ‘C: Local Disk') 7. It is strongly recommended that you do not run any programs or do any web browsing during system defragment. ![]()
8. Once Complete, your system should run more efficiently.
