A sudden full-screen warning with flashing colors, a loud alarm or a telephone number can be frightening. Many such warnings are part of a browser-based tech support scam—not a legitimate diagnosis of your computer.
Common warning signs of a scam
- The message claims your files are locked unless you call immediately.
- A webpage displays a supposed Microsoft, Apple or antivirus support phone number.
- It pressures you to install a remote-access tool or pay for emergency help.
- It tells you not to close the browser or contact anyone else.
What should you do?
Try closing the affected browser tab or window. If it will not close, you can end the browser task through Task Manager on Windows or Force Quit on macOS. Reopen the browser without restoring the suspicious session if possible. Avoid clicking anything inside the warning itself.
What if you called or allowed remote access?
Disconnect the affected computer from the network and use another trusted device to contact your bank if payments or banking access were involved. Change exposed passwords and review accounts from a trusted device. Tell a technician exactly what the caller requested or changed.
Scam or actual malware?
