Many computers are quiet and responsive when first switched on, then become slow and noisy after they have been running for a while. That pattern can indicate a cooling problem rather than a shortage of memory or a software issue.
What is thermal throttling?
When a processor or graphics component becomes too hot, the computer may lower its operating speed to reduce heat. This protective behavior is called thermal throttling. It can make the computer feel slow even when the hardware was fast moments earlier.
Common causes of overheating
Lint and dust can restrict airflow through cooling passages, fans and heatsinks.
A fan that no longer spins properly may let temperatures climb rapidly.
Rendering, video meetings, games, and soft surfaces that block laptop vents can increase heat.
On some systems, deteriorated thermal interface material or heatsink contact can reduce cooling performance.
Safe checks you can make
- Shut the computer down if it becomes abnormally hot, repeatedly shuts down, or has a burning smell.
- Place a laptop on a firm, level surface instead of bedding or fabric that blocks vents.
- Check that exterior vents are not covered and that the surrounding workspace has airflow.
- Observe whether the fan sounds unusually loud, rattles, or does not seem to run.
- Follow the manufacturer's exterior-cleaning instructions; do not force compressed air into an enclosed laptop or open sealed devices without the proper procedure.
When professional service makes sense
Persistent overheating can require internal cleaning, fan replacement, checking heatsink mounting, or testing for other hardware problems. At The Computer Hospital, we can evaluate the cooling system and recommend appropriate laptop or desktop computer repair.
If the computer is sluggish without heat or fan symptoms, read our five common causes of a slow computer guide.
